The second largest island after Mainland whose cliff rise to more than 1000ft The Old Man of Hoy is a 450ft pillar of rock rising out of the sea. Longhope, a village of small white houses in southern Hoy was the base for the lifeboat whose crew of 8 died in 1969 going to the rescue of the Liberian tanker ‘Irene’.
