The county town lies on the river Orwell and it was here that Cardinal Wolsey was born about 1475.
In 1528 he founded a college in the town, and all that remains is the red-brick gateway in College St.
Ancient House, in the Butter Market is a 15th century building with richly carved plasterwork.
Charles Dickens once stayed in the pub The Great White Horse, which provided him with a setting for Pickwick.
