The Island of Iona has special significance for all Christians. In AD563 Columba and his followers arrived here from Ireland to extend in Scotland and the north of England the gospel which had first been introduced by St Ninian at Whithorn in AD397.
2250 acres, the Abbey and other sacred buildings and historic sites were conveyed by the 8th Duke of Argyll in 1899 to the Iona Cathedral Trustees and are not owned by the Trust.

The Hugh Fraser Foundation generously made funds available to buy the island from the Trustees of the 10th Duke of Argyll as a gift to the nation in memory of the late Lord Fraser of Allander and provided the Trust with the endowment.
