The Royal Burgh of Inverurie on the River Don has wide streets of granite buildings and is a good centre for salmon and trout fishing in the rivers Dee and Don in spring and summer.
The earliest charters date back to Mary, Queen of Scots and James VI although the first charter was granted by Robert the Bruce in 1308.
There have been two great battles fought here in 1308 and in 1411.
The ruined castle of Dunnideer sits on top of a conical hill 10 miles northwest.
