URPoint Details

Often called the capital of the Highlands and is the natural gateway and route to the north, situated on the Ness at the end of Glen More and the Caledonian Canal. Here the waters of the Beauly Firth and the Inner Moray or Inverness Firth merge at the narrows which are overlooked to the north by Craigton Point.

In 1652, Cromwell erected a fort, known as ‘The Sconce’ on the right bank of the Ness but there are only a few fragments apart from the clock tower which still stands.

There are many fine buildings including Dunbar’s Hospital dating from 1668; the Episcopal Cathedral from 1866; the Tolbooth Steeple of 1791; Queen Mary’s former lodgings of 1562 in Bridge Street; and the 16th century Abertaff House.

Dalcross Castle, 7 miles northeast is the 17th century castle restored in the 1920s and 1930s.

One of the most famous battles took place here at Culloden in 1746 and is probably one of the most emotional places in Scotland.

On the Moors near Inverness is where the Duke of Cumberland fought the royalists of Prince Charles Edward on the 16th April 1746.

To the southeast are the ruins of the three large chambered Stones of Clava.
