An ancient royal burgh on a wide bay at the mouth of the River Bervie. Its charter has a romantic history.
It is reputed that David II returning from exile with his queen was chased by the English fleet and driven by a storm landed here at the rock called ‘The King’s Step.
He was so impressed by his welcome that he raised the town to its royal status. King James VI granted a later charter.
A memorial was erected in 1969 to Hercules Linton, the designer of the clipper ‘Cutty Sark’, who was born here at 4 Market Square in 1836 and died in the same house 64 years later.
Allardice Castle a mile up the Bervie Water was built in 1662.
Den Fenella is a gorge with a delightful waterfall on the Fenella Burn that runs into the North Sea.
