The village once held sheep and cattle fairs when the winding lanes were packed with farmers and their animals.
On top of the market column on the village green is a stone figure of a ‘Green Man’, a supernatural forest-being.
In Button Street, animal bones were used for making buttons and silk is still woven in some of the cottages.
