Tudor, Georgian and Victorian buildings make up this lovely long village on the Roman road between Brentwood and Chelmsford. The pleasant High Street has a number of 18th century and earlier buildings.
The Spread Eagle and the almshouses date from 1840.
John Troughton once a page boy to the Petre family became a Commander in the navy and fought the Spanish and Portuguese in the 1600's. His ship ‘The Lioness’ was built using oak.
