URPoint Details

A village at the centre of an area renowned for its caves and underground streams.

Ben More Assynt at 3273ft is 4 miles south and on the lower slopes of the village are the Allt nan Uamh caves in which human bones 8,000 years old have been found.

A mile north on the shore of Loch Assynt is Ardvreck Castle a MacLeod stronghold and where in 1650 Neil MacLeod arrested the Marquis of Montrose.

Geologists come from all over the world to study at the centre here for the Archaean gneiss rock, some of the oldest formations in the world and only found here, the Outer Hebrides and near the St Lawrence River in Canada.

This is the heart of some of the most beautiful and rugged mountains in Scotland and many of the surrounding peaks are composed of Torridon sandstone.

There are many charming lochs all around here and in one loch is the rare gilaroo trout.
