URPoint Details
One of eleven villages known as ‘The Saints’, the parish of Ilketshall St Lawrence stands on the old Roman road that runs between Bungay and Halesworth.
The name of Ilketshall, borne by four of the saints, indicates that they were once part of the lands of Ulfketill.
After the Norman Conquest the village became part of the Bardolphs manor and the family held it for many years.
The church is a simple 12th century building and stands on a mound reputed to be an old Roman staging post.
