The church of St James in the centre of this little village holds a ghostly tale and was mentioned in the Domesday Book.

There is a very interesting tablet on the wall stating: Benefactions - Alice Dix by will dated Oct 4th. 19th Henry Vll devised a ?mestead & certain lands in Icklingham for charitable uses ?field property was sold 1874 by the order of the Charity Commissioners of England and Wales and the money invested in consols in the name of Official Trustee. The income is applied according to a scheme approved by the said Commissioners. (rewritten May 1884). By Act of Enclosure 1813 - 100 acres of heath land 13.0.20 of meadow land were allotted to the same trustees , for the poor inhabitants of the township of Icklingham legally settled therein & also for those who prior to the passing of the said Act were entitled to right of firing. John King, gentleman of Worlington by will dated Aug 14th 1706 left a rent charge of 20 shillings per annum upon his lands in Icklingham to be expended in bread for the working poor on St John's Day.
