Hull - Church of St Mary the Virgin

Lowgate, Hull , England

URPoint Details

St Mary the Virgin Church has a nave and chancel dating from the early 15th century, and the tower from 1697 replacing an earlier one which collapsed in 1518.

A legend, however, claims that Henry VIII pulled down the tower in 1541 to help build his own palace which stood on the opposite side of Lowgate. The new tower was pierced in 1861 and the archway at the base of the tower to allow the footpath through. The exterior was refaced in ashlar in the same year.

The church is a grade II* listed building.
