URPoint Details
(pronounced Hoxen)
The village has for centuries been held to be where St Edmund was martyred in 869 after he had attempted to repel the invading Danes and his body was taken to Bury St Edmunds.
Houses of timber, brick and plaster are dotted around the outskirts of the village and whose attractive centre is reached by way of a shaded lane.
On the road leading to Hoxne Cross the historic Goldbrook Bridge crosses a tributary of the River Dove.
A plaque on the bridge records that the young Edmund was captured by the Danes in 870 after his defeat in a battle near Thetford, some 20 miles away.
