Tudor houses and inns surround the little village green lies in the ancient woodland west of Ashdown Forest and on the green the sign shows a knight and a squire from the Bayeux Tapestry, recalling the Norman family of Cahagnes, some of whom fought at the Battle of Hastings, and who later gave their name to the manor.
The Norman Church of St Giles has a miniature effigy of a knight, thought to date from the 13th century.
