The villages of East and West Horsley are often referred to locally as just the Horsleys.
They lie in well wooded area, which includes the spacious Netley Heath.
There are a number of old manors and mansions including the Jacobean mansion of West Horsley Place once the home of Sir Walter Raleigh’s son, Carew.
Following his father’s execution he obtained possession of the head, which had been on view on London Bridge, and had it buried in West Horsley church.
