Thomas Hardcastle, a Lancashire cotton merchant acquired the Horninghold estate and neighbouring Blaston Hall, and it was his family who laid out the village in its present form.
With its mature trees and individually designed houses arranged around the 12th Century Church of St. Peter, Horninghold has a distinctive character of its own.
