There has probably been a royal park here since the Augustinian Abbey was founded in the early 12th century but it was formally enclosed in 1541 during the reign of James V. The park has some interesting archaeology including four hill forts, other settlements and round them a fascinating landscape of prehistoric and early medieval farming activity.
