Built by Elizabeth I's Chancellor, Sir Christopher Hatton, the palace was then the largest house in England.
Holdenby secured its place in history when it became the prison of Charles I during the English Civil War. Reduced to 1/8th of its original size in the 17th century, Holdenby lay in ruins until a sympathetic reconstruction was undertaken by the owner's great, great grandmother in the 1870s, with some of the Elizabethan materials.
The House has a fine collections of rare pianos, furniture, paintings and interesting artefacts, some dating back to the time of Charles I.

The Holdenby Falconry Centre, authentic armoury, reconstructed 17th century homestead and collection of rare farm animals compliment the beauty and history of Holdenby.
