A delightful medieval town by the River Hiz, still retains many of its Tudor and Georgian buildings round the lovely old market square, and 12th century church surrounded by half timbered houses and old coaching inn.

Hitchin Priory built in the 18th century, retains some of the 14th century monastery. Surrounded by a moat, it is in stone with a Palladian south front incorporating a semi-circular porch and two projecting wings with Venetian windows.
St Mary’s Church in the market Place has woodwork that is without equal in the county. The church

The museum has the largest collection of costumes in the county, also a wonderful Victorian Apothecary shop. Display of Hertfordshire Imperial Yeomanry (mustered to fight Napoleon's threatened invasion).
