Originally a plain yellow brick box built for the 2nd Lord Stawell in 1793, Hinton Ampner has been remodelled several times. In the 1860s it was transformed into a vast mock-Tudor mansion by John Dutton, son of the 2nd Lord Sherborne; 70 years later John's grandson Ralph, 8th and last Lord Sherborne, remodelled the house in neo-Georgian style to provide a suitable setting for his fine collection of 18th century furniture and pictures; and in 1960-3 he again rebuilt and restocked it, after a fire destroyed his earlier work. The house is a plain 2 storey block
