URPoint Details
The Perpendicular Church of All Saints dating from 1493 with the distinction of having been completed during only one phase of construction. Stair-turret with lantern of flying buttresses, pinnacles and three-and-four light windows. The woodwork and glass all date from the same time. Important stained glass windows show the miracles of St Nicholas. A 19th century restoration by Sir Gilbert Scott, to whom the church's architecture had been an inspiration as a boy. A clerestory of continuous clear lights makes the interior very bright. Stone rows of angels border the chancel ceiling, mostly bearing scrolls, those over the altar playing musical instruments. There is a damaged 16th century alabaster Denton tomb. The Dentons were Royalists in the Civil War, when their mansion nearby was razed. Cromwellian bullet holes still scar the 15th century north door in the beautiful fan-vaulted porch.
