High Wycombe

High Wycombe , England

URPoint Details

World famous for the manufacture of the Windsor Chair, High Wycombe is a centre for the furniture industry.

The High Street is wide and handsome and typically Georgian. At its western end stands the Little Market House known locally as 'The Pepperpot'.

Further down the High Street, above a portico jutting into the road, is the figure of a large red lion (once the sign of an inn). Disraeli stood here when he first campaigned to enter Parliament, and over 100 years later Churchill stood in the same place rallying support during the 1946 election.

One of the features of the town is the open space to the east, known as 'The Rye'. Used as a recreational area, it is also the venue for visiting fairs and other outdoor activities.
