Before the Somerset marshes were drained between the 10th and 14th century, ships could sail as far inland as Glastonbury.
This delightful village of honey-coloured stone with ancient houses sitting around a small green has splendid views of the peat moors and distant hills.
The Church of St Andrew dates from the 14th and 15th century and has an excellent carved roof, a magnificent 500 year old rood screen and bench-ends decorated with poppy heads.
There are some fascinating gargoyles including a trumpeter, a fiddler, a piper, a man throwing stones and a monkey nursing a baby.
