URPoint Details
With centuries old fishing cottages proudly displaying evidence of their age, chapel ruins and unspoilt cliff tops there is plenty of scope for celebrating the rich history.
Always a leading contender for prizes in the Britain in Bloom competition, Heysham provides a colourful walk for the visitor - along the main street, past the little shops and houses, perhaps stopping for a drink at the Royal Hotel.
The peaceful, rather remote haven of Sunderland Point is perched on the banks of the River Lune and is cut off by the tide twice a day so visitors are asked to tread carefully in case of being stranded.
The point, once one of the north-west's most important ports, more so even than Lancaster, is famous for Sambo's grave. The last resting-place of the reputed slave who died here, can still be seen.
