URPoint Details
The squat fortress dates from 1244 and stands on the bleak moorland overlooking the Hermitage Water, and was the home of the Earl of Bothwell, lover of Mary, Queen of Scots, whom he married in 1567 after the murder of her husband, Lord Darnley.
The famous restored a stronghold of the Douglas Clan has four towers and connecting walls, outwardly almost perfect and the interior shows the remains of the original tower.
