The village lies in a pleasant and lofty setting on the main Carlisle to Edinburgh road with the Moorfoot hills to the west.
To the southwest is the little church sitting on the delightful road following the Heriot Water and the Dewar Burn through the hills and reaching 1,200ft where the counties of Midlothian meets Peebles.
The descent follows the valley of the Leithen Water towards Tweeddale with Windlestraw Law rising to 2,161ft to the east.
