In 1904 Elgar took up residence at Plas Gwyn in Hereford, where he composed many of his greatest works. Five months before he died, Elgar ended his career as a conductor when he wielded the baton in performances of The Kingdom, Gerontius and the Cello Concerto at Hereford in 1933.
Hereford's General Hospital on the north bank of the river was built by a subscription raised by Dr Thomas Talbot of Ullingswick and dates from 1783.

The War Memorial, St Peters Square
Consecrated on 1921 to commemorate the fallen of two world wars. The crest of the SAS Regiment, whose headquarters are in the city, appears on the memorial.

Once the centre of Herefordshire's County Government was designed by Sir Robert Smirke architect of the British Museum in London. The building was erected between 1815 and 1817 at a cost of £25,000.
