Henley-on-Thames - Church of St Mary the Virgin
Hart St, Henley-on-Thames RG9 2AU, England
URPoint Details
St Mary the Virgin's Church sits in the heart of the town, its partly chequer-patterned exterior and 16th century tower with its octagonal turret is framed by two 18th century inns. The interior is largely medieval and the 13th century naves are still intact.
The 15th century St Leonard's Chapel has gargoyles on its parapet and canopied niches beside the altars. Lady Periam, d1621, looks out from an imposing monument.
There are numerous Victorian additions, including a second north aisle, and two fine stained glass windows by Hadrman in the north chapel. There is a great view from the tower.
