The ‘Peasant Poet’ John Clare was born here in 1793, died 70 years later and is buried in the churchyard. He wrote ‘Descriptive of Rural Life and Scenery’ in 1820.
He was admitted to an insane asylum after suffering from mental delusions and where he spent the last 20 years of his life.
