A large and pleasant place, once the site of a Roman settlement and to the south there are Roman remains excavated in 1827.There are several fine houses, including College House which has two buttresses, slit window and a four-centred archway and Helpston House, halfway up the hill has a canted bay window, gables and dormers. Woodhall Manor, dates back to 1146 and is one of the oldest houses in the county.

The church of St Botolph's is 14th century and has some Norman features.

The "Northamptonshire Peasant Poet" John Clare is buried in the churchyard. 1793-1864 He wrote many poems incuding Descriptive of Rural Life 1820
