URPoint Details
Lying where the green valley of Strath Ullie crosses the Helmsdale River is noted for fishing. The ruined castle dates from 1488 and was the scene of a double murder in 1567 when the Earl of Sutherland and his wife were poisoned. The road north to Berriedale is one of the most picturesque as it winds its way through Navidale ravines to enter Caithness near the rocky Ord of Caithness at a height of more than 700ft with fine views towards the bare hills in the background.
