Situated at the point where the beautiful Loch Gare merges into the broadening estuary of the Clyde.

An obelisk in town commemorates Henry Bell, designer of the 'Comet' one of the earliest steamboats.

A road leading northeast gives access to the shores of the famous Loch Lomond.   Enjoy a cruise aboard the Waverley, the world's last seagoing paddle steamer.

About a mile from town the road leads to Glen Fruin with Beinn Caorach rising 2,338ft rising to the north.It was in this glen that the Macgregors and the Colquhouns that a savage battle took place in 1603 which gave the glen its name meaning 'glen of sorrow'.

Planned in the 18th century by Sir James Colquhoun of Luss and named after his wife Helen and made up of leafy streets and fine architecture, including the famous Charles Rennie Mackintosh's Hillhouse, and a monument to John Logie Baird who was born here in 1888.
