John Rolfe was born in Heacham on the 6 May 1585. He was one of the early English settlers of North America. He is credited with the first successful cultivation of a tobacco as an export crop in Virginia. Rolfe died in 1622 (aged 37) at his home Varina Farms, in the Colony of Virginia
The village sign shows a portrait of the Red Indian princess Pocahontas who married John Rolfe on the on 5 April 1614. She died at 22 and is buried in St George’s churchyard in Gravesend, Kent. She left a son who migrated to Virginia, USA. President Woodrow Wilson's wife was a descendant.
