The ruined 12th century castle was a stronghold for Anglo-Norman rulers and was an excellent vantage point high above the River Wye.
Hay is home to the largest bookshop and books tumble from the many other shops in town.
This small town is separated from England only by the Dulos brook and sits at the foot of the Black Mountains.
There are many fine walks from here including moorland walks on the heathery Black Mountains which are composed of old red sandstone.
The highest vantage points are Hay Bluff at 2,219ft and Lord Hereford’s Knob at 2,263ft
