The cottage industry of knitting made this pretty town famous 200 years ago. Mills were built in the 19th century and items were sent all over the world.
One of the most important Border towns, sitting among wooded hills in Teviotdale, where the Slitrig Water and the River Teviot meet.
The Town House has a pinnacled clock tower and the old parish church of St Mary’s is interesting as is James Hogg’s house and the cottage of ‘Old Mortality’.
The ruined Branxholme Tower lies to the southwest an old home of the Scott’s dated 1571.
Goldielands is a ruined keep two miles southwest was once belonged to the Scott family.
