Old coaching town dating back to Saxon times, Fore Street, a fairly steep hill has some fine Georgian houses.
The new town began to develop in the late 1880s. In the 1930s, its growth was linked to the thriving aviation industry. This is the home of the de Havilland family and company, creators of such fine aircraft as the Tiger Moth, Mosquito, Vampire and the world's first trans-continental jetliner, the revolutionary and unfortunate Comet.
