A medieval atmosphere of sea-faring heritage still lingers in the narrow streets and passageways of this town, including the Redoubts and High/Low Lighthouses.
Attractive old town built on a grid pattern in the 13th century. An important seafaring base used for English fleets during the 14th and 15th century French campaigns.
The Rivers Orwell and Stour meet here and join the North Sea.
The church of St Nicholas rebuilt in 1821 has memorials from an earlier church, a bomb from World War I and a collection of 17th century Dutch tiles.
