URPoint Details

Harrold is approached over a curving 13th century packhorse bridge and causeway.

Here an atmosphere of old village life remains. Walking down Brook Lane, where each limestone cottage with mossy thatch is approached by individual stone bridges, it is easy to imagine village life decades ago. A time when misdemeanours such as drunkenness would result in a night in the round lock-up on the village green, and where provisions were sold from the covered 'butter market' cross.

Much of St Peter's church dates from the 13th century.

Harrold Lockup and Buttermarket is on the village green, this circular lock-up was last used in the 19th century.
The Buttermarket dates from the end of the 17th century.

The Old Manor dates from 1600 and much the church dates from the 13th century.

In the church is a memorial to Anne Jolliffe who in 1732 founded almshouses and later married the physician to Queen Anne, Dr Richard Mead. Anne established the practice of inoculation and spent much time and vast amounts of money in seeking remedies to eradicate the plague. The snug bar in the Muntjac (The Globe) pub has a floodlight well some 30 feet deep, which has been known to rise within 4 feet from the top in
