Harold Abrahams was born on the 15 December 1899 in Bedford and died at Enfield on 14 January 1978 (aged 78). He was buried in the same grave as his wife Sybil Evers, in Saint John the Baptist Churchyard in Great Amwell in Hertfordshire

Educated in Bedford he then went on to Gonville and Caius College in Cambridge from 1920 to 1924, he trained as a lawyer.

He was a member of the Cambridge University Athletics Club (of which he was president 1922–1923),

At the summer Olympics in Paris in 1924, he was a Gold Medalist in 100 metres in a time of 10.6 seconds and was the opening runner in the 4x100metres relay in the team came second. Breaking his leg in May 1925 whilst long-jumping the injury ended his athletic career. He returned to his legal career. In 1928, he was team captain of the British Olympic team at Amsterdam and editor of the Official British Olympic Report for the same games. Subsequently he worked as an athletics journalist for forty years, becoming a commentator on sport for BBC Radio and in 1936, reported the Berlin Olympics. Later in his life, he also became president of the Jewish Athletic Association, and served as chairman for the Amateur Athletics
