No picnics in garden, only in car park and Country Park. Car park gates close 6pm. Country Park open daily all year, dawn to dusk.
Parts of the garden have fairly easy access herb garden is especially recommended for visually handicapped visitors who may touch and smell the herbs. The restaurant and the ground floor of the Hall are accessible by wheelchair the shop however has a few steps at the entrance wheelchair available. Guide dogs admitted.

Only the walls and gazebos remain from Bess of Hardwick's late 16th century garden. The present layout of the south garden dates from 1870s and grass alleys are flanked by yew and hornbeam hedges planted by Lady Louisa Egerton, daughter of the 7th Duke of Devonshire, divide the garden into quadrants. Orchards, lawns, nuttery and herb garden occupy these four sections, conveying the spirit of an Elizabethan garden.
The west courtyard was laid out in the 1920s by Blanche, 6th Duke's niece.
The Duchess Evelyn, wife of the 9th Duke, sank the pond in the east court to provide water for fire fighting. She also planted the double avenue called the ‘wineglass' that closes the eastern vista.
