URPoint Details

Nestling on the edge of the marshes near the point where the river Chet flows into the Yare lies the old village of Hardley.
Keen walkers can follow the footpath along the river bank to Hardely Cross. This ancient cross stands at the meeting point of the river Yare and Chet and marks the boundary between Norwich and Great Yarmouth.

On the higher ground overlooking the street and marshes stands the village church with its round Norman tower and 15th century nave and chancel. The screen dates back to the 15th century and the medieval font, standing on two steps, has carved angels and lions on the sides. Entering by the south door, you get the feeling that time has stood still. The old wooden pews are untouched by centuries of wear. Some poppy heads, some box pews, and on the north side an arrangement of pews in three sides of a square, maybe this where the servants from the Hall sat. On the north wall is a large painting of St Christopher and a smaller one to St Catherine.
