William and Mary style completed in 1701 for wealthy Chancery barrister, Thomas Vernon, a distant relation of both the Vernons of Haddon Hall and the Vernons of Sudbury Hall in Derbyshire.
Three local masons appear to have submitted designs around 1700 for Vernon's new home.
Each design depicts a front of eleven bays with three-bay projecting wings (the form of the present building), suggesting that the brief was fairly specific but apparently none was adopted, and the designer of Hanbury remains unidentified.
