URPoint Details
An isolated but pretty village in red brick and renowned as the home of cricket, where the Club was founded in 1760 and played on Broadhalfpenny Down two miles northeast of the village. The club was most important between 1772 and 1787, when with its help, the M C C was founded. Nearby is the Old Bat and Ball Inn which still retains some of its former glory.
The church has a mix of many styles from Anglo-Saxon to Norman and the 19th century. A huge yew stands in the churchyard which has some fine monuments and gravestones dating from the 17th and 18th centuries and there are some graves of famous cricketers.
