HALLATON (Old English farmstead In a narrow valley)
The village is famous as the venue of the annual `Bottle Kicking' contest against the neighbouring village of Medbourne.
Kicking barrels and scrambling for hare pies plays the traditional choosing of a Hallaton Bottle King.
All that remains of the 12th century Hallaton Castle are the grassy earthworks about a mile out of a very attractive village.
Described as the `Epitome of an English village', it has thatched ironstone cottages and elegant brick houses. Some of the stone cottages have both mullion and transom windows.
A feature of some of the houses, are the little lanes leading through to the green at the back of the houses.
The green has a village cross in the form of a stepped circle with a conical roof.
