Edward Ackroyd, a Halifax manufacturer paid for the All Souls Church, (Churches Conservation Trust) to be built on a grand scale in 1856 to 1859 by Sir Gilbert Scott, and thought to be one of the best by him, but the lament that it was not grander. The spire is 236ft high and there are transepts and vestries as well as the chancel and aisled nave.
