A beautifully sited ruin incorporating a 13th century fortified manor which was extended in the 14th and 15th centuries, and a fine 16th century chapel and two vaulted pit prisons.
Once a stronghold of the Earl of Bothwell and it was to here that he brought Mary, Queen of Scots in 1567 when she was fleeing from the hostile Scottish lords and is situated on the banks of the Tyne to this now ruined 13th century castle.
