This is a charming town with many buildings of historic interest.
Alexander II of Scotland was born here in 1198 and John Knox in 1505 and Samuel Smiles.
A Royal Burgh situated on the River Tyne with the Lammermuir Hills as a background.
There are a few interesting buildings of note including the Mercat Cross topped by a goat, Town House with its curfew bell the work of William Adam, Bothwell Castle a ruined 16th or 17th century town house.
Haddington House and Moat House date from the 17th century,
Two fine old bridges span the river Tyne, the Nungate Bridge is 16th century from which criminals were hanged and Abbey Bridge a 16th century structure.
Barnes Castle ruins are two miles north of Haddington near the Garleton Hills.
The little church of Morham, 3 miles east is a charming little place dating from 1685 and 1724 and still retains a bell dated 1681.
