URPoint Details
This little Chapel of Ease (Churches Conservation Trust) was built in 1660, when Cromwell's Commonwealth ended and the monarchy was restored, but neither returning Stuarts nor restoring Victorians altered its simple and austere appearance and it reflects most movingly.
17th century puritan worship, the plain stone and brick walls and floors, the pantile roof, the plain glass windows, the low pulpit and the upright, narrow pews (unsuited to Popish kneeling) all tell the tale.
Also of interest is the large brick parish church of St Mary Magdalene, built by Sir George Gilbert Scott.
