URPoint Details
Guildford’s oldest ecclesiastical building, St Mary’s Church dating from Anglo-Saxon times and the tower dates from the days of Edward the Confessor.
The church has been restored but still retains some of its 11 to 13th century original features.
The central apse facing onto the street was shortened and the curve removed in 1825 at the request of George IV, because his coach could not comfortably negotiate the narrow street.
The church has been Grade I listed since 1953
