Grinton - Church of St Andrew

Grinton DL11 6HW

URPoint Details

The Church of St Andrew is Norman in origin with fragments of the old Norman church remain, including the font and the tower arch, which dates from the late 12th century. Other parts of the building date from the late 13th or early 14th century, and the pulpit is Jacobean, but St Andrew's is now mainly a 15th-century rebuild. In medieval times the dead were brought in wicker biers from the far ends of Swaledale to the spacious churchyard where the part Norman church is called the Cathedral of the Dales.
